Georgia homeschool basics
What Georgia law asks of you
- Declaration of Intent to the GA Department of Education within 30 days of starting, then by Sept 1 every year (filed online with GaDOE).
- 180 days of instruction a year, at least 4.5 hours each day (unless the child is physically unable).
- Teach at least reading, language arts, math, social studies and science.
- Parent teaching their own children needs a high school diploma or GED/HSE; you may hire a tutor with the same.
- Annual written progress report in each required subject; keep it at least 3 years. Not submitted.
- Nationally standardized test at least every 3 years starting at the end of 3rd grade; keep scores. Not submitted.
- Attendance: the current statute has no attendance-reporting requirement (older law required monthly reports; that was removed). Keeping your own day log is wise for proving 180 days.
